Casada has compiled thirty four of Rutledge’s turkey tales. Rutledge is still entertaining, though the world has changed since the first half of the twentieth century.

The title says it all. Describes hunting tactics used by experts in getting that resistant gobbler.

Davis, Henry E. The American Wild Turkey. Small-arms Technical Publishing Co., SC. 1949. pp. 328.
One of the classics in wild turkey literature. Turkey hunting anecdotes and the need for saving the wild turkey from extinction are distinguishing features of this book.

Gooch, Bob. In Search of the Wild Turkey. IL: Greenlakes Living Press, Ltd., 1978. pp. 182.
Though dated, this information on turkey populations and hunting in fifty states is interesting. Gooch wrote when stocking turkeys and game management were beginning to pay off.

Hanenkrat, William Frank. The Education of a Turkey Hunter. NY: Winchester Press, 1974. pp. 214.
Turkey hunting education based on over fifty years expe4rience. Covers “how to” through entertaining anecdotes.

Kelly, Tom. Tenth Legion. NY: The Lyons Press. 1998 edition. pp 114.
Many turkey hunters consider this the classic book on modern wild turkey hunting. A concise yet comprehensive introduction to the sport.

Latham, Roger M. Complete Book of the Wild Turkey. PA: The Stackpole Co., 1956.
A thorough treatment of many aspects of turkey hunting, but also a good source of information on conservation and wild turkey restoration. A revised edition came out in 1976.

Latham, Roger. “Hunting the Wild Turkey” in Hunting Secrets of the Experts. Vlad Evanoff. NY: Doubleday and Co., 1964. pp. 251.
An interesting chapter with insights into wild turkey hunting before 1965.

McDaniel, John. The American Wild Turkey. Hunting Tactics and Techniques. NY: The Lyons Press. 2000. pp. 248.
This is professor and wild turkey hunter McDaniel’s third book on turkey hunting. A respectful treatment of turkeys, hunters and hunting.

McIlhenny, Edward A. The Wild Turkey and Its Hunting. SC: The Premier Press. 1986.
McIlhenny presents the writing of Charles L. Jordan who spent most of his life studying and hunting the wild turkey. After Jordan’s death in 1909, McIlhenny completed the book, relating the story from Jordan’s notes. This book was first copyrighted in 1912.

Mettler, John J. Jr., Wild Turkeys, Hunting and Watching. VT: Storey Books. 1998. pp. 167.
A practical guide for all skill levels by a veterinarian and hunter. This book gives clear, succinct steps from preparing to hunt to mounting and photographing the gobbler. Includes thirty recipes.

Phillips, John E. Complete Turkey Hunting. NY: Outdoor Life Books. 1988. pp. 317.
Full of important information about wild turkeys and how to successfully hunt them. This well illustrated book introduces master turkey hunters and tells how to become one.

Rutledge, Archibald. Hunter’s Choice. VT: The Countryman Press, 1946. pp. 210.
A plethora of gems on hunting and hunters, set in the old south. While stories include deer, grouse, wild bear, quail, waterfowl and even snakes, there is a lot of turkey hunting. Major wild turkey chapters include “The Wrong Gobbler,” “Steve Knows How,” “The Rogue of Orguic Valley,” and “Magic on Mound Ridge.

Sandys, Edwyn. Upland Game Birds. NY: The Macmillan Co., 1902. pp. 427.
This section on “The Turkey Family” (p. 248-302) portrays turkey populations and turkey hunting prior to 1902. What a great way to begin understanding turkey history, preservation and hunting.

Schorger, A.W. The Wild Turkey, Its History and Domestication. OK: University of Oklahoma. 1996. pp. 625.
Schorger provides a comprehensive history of the wild turkey with in-depth looks at descriptions, physiology, habits and utilization of the big bird. Also, he addresses the management, hunting and restorations of wild turkeys.
Note: Early restoration efforts in South Carolina during the 1940’s and 50’s are addressed on pages 456-457.

Strickland, Ronnie, “Cuz”. The Truth About Spring Turkey Hunting According to Cuz. MS: True Exposure Publishing, Inc., 2000. pp. 116.
This is straight talk about turkey hunting addiction and the joys of the outdoors. Great turkey hunting tales for all levels of experience. Has a chapter entitled “God Bless the Neophytes”.

Step by step preparation of fans, beards and body mounts is described and illustrated with many pictures.

Williams, Lovett E., Jr. Wild Turkey Country. Willow Creek Press. WI. 1991. pp. 144.
This informal, in-depth look at the wild turkey is illustrated by incredible photography. Enjoyable reading for those interested in the past, present and future of this great bird in North America.
